It was the key that set Aaron off. It was lying there in the change dish beside the front door. Just an innocent little object, but the rage jumped up in him, unreasoning and full of hate. Aaron took the key in his hand and let his fingers trace its ridges and bumps. Then he went to the kitchen and rummaged in the junk drawer. The spare keys were all present and accounted for. The bitch had left. After everything he'd done for her, after everything she cost him, she had run out. He knew this in a primal way, a tugging in his spine so visceral that it made him nauseous. He went through the house anyway, taking it room by room as if it were a crime scene.

He tried to shut off his emotions, to look at everything simply as it was instead of looking at it all and feeling the weight of their marriage on his shoulders. He walked stiffly, as if he were aware that he was stepping across the crumbling foundation of his marriage. He was aware of the big trapezius muscles in his shoulders tightening as his heart began to pound. His vision began to waver, and Aaron had to steady himself. He could do this. He had to. If it was a crime scene, what would he do? Where would he check first? The bedroom.

Their bedroom was barely dented by Sarah's departure. Like a drop of rain on the surface of the ocean, she left no permanent mark. The bed was made, the closet doors closed. The television was off. In the bathroom, she had left more traces. Some makeup was gone. Aaron wasn't sure how much, but it was enough to be noticeable.

A gym bag was missing. That was all. All of her jewelry was still there, except for her wedding and engagement rings. Aaron's heart was momentarily lightened by that fact. There were few clothes gone from her closet. All the underwear seemed to be in her dresser. He went downstairs again and looked through the drawers in the bar and buffet. Nothing was missing that he could see. He checked the built-in media center in the living room. Emergency cash was still in place. He counted. Half of it was gone.

He called her cell phone, but it went directly to voicemail. He stabbed the line closed with an index finger. There was no note, no indication, no fucking clue. No idea where the bitch had gotten off to.

Aaron was sweating now. Big drops were rolling under the collar of his uniform blouse. He could feel his anger expanding, getting ready to blow like a volcano. He called her phone again. It was still off. He called her parents' house, but she wasn't there, either.

“Is something wrong?” Her mother said. Aaron could tell by her voice that whatever had gone wrong, Sarah's mother didn't know anything. Yet.

“No,” he said. He was amazed at how calm his voice sounded. “Her phone is going straight to voicemail.
